Modern 3d printed vases inspired by ancient Hispanic craftsmanship

Echoes of Hispanic Identity in 3D-Printed Form

In our search for a different approach to 3D-printed vase design, we began exploring organic forms, shapes that feel alive and natural, like a vine climbing an ancient vessel or the textured surface of a tree trunk. Over time, ceramics buried underground often become intertwined with roots, giving rise to unexpected patterns and new visual narratives. This idea of transformation became a central inspiration. Our journey took us to Oaxaca, where we encountered the region’s traditional black ceramics, known for their perforations and intricate ornamental detailing. We created the OAX Vase as a tribute to this place and its heritage, but rather than replicating tradition, we sought to reinterpret it. Using computational design methods and a refined, contemporary set of design rules, we introduced a deliberate twist, merging cultural memory with digital precision to create something entirely new.

Designing for a Greener Future

The OAX Vase is made entirely from 100% recyclable materials, reflecting our commitment to sustainable design. It consists of three functional elements working together as a single form. The perforated black outer shell defines the vase’s identity while protecting the interior. Its vine-like geometry reduces material use and provides structural strength, resulting in a lightweight yet durable design. At the centre, a translucent core houses a removable glass cylinder, making the vase fully waterproof. This allows it to hold fresh flowers, dry arrangements, or LED tealights, enabling the creation of subtle and atmospheric lighting effects.

Drawing from Nature and Archeology to create new ideas

As mentioned in other articles, archaeology is a key field of inspiration for our design practice. It allows us to look back in order to move forward, drawing from ancient objects, techniques, and gestures to create modern, reimagined forms. In the world of 3D printing, where it often feels as though everything has already been invented, we find value in reviewing traditional craftsmanship ideas and styles. By revisiting historical references, we explore new ways of blending forms, textures, and visual languages. These layers of influence create connections across time and cultures, resulting in contemporary reinterpretations and entirely new design expressions.
